In this new cooking class, we learn from/teach each other how to buy, prepare, eat, and store seasonal harvests to create tasty, healthy meal items using seasonal produce. Following an open mic model, there is no set instructor for this 20-week class class. The class supplies fresh, organic produce from local farms (High Meadow Farms in Johnson Creek, Fiedler’s Organic in Watertown, and farmers’ market produce). We discuss our experiences with these foods and then show each other how and where to buy, cook, and store them. Improvization and experimentation are encouraged. Nutritional aspects, food and beverage pairings, and alternate preparations for each food are discussed.
Come to the class on Tuesday night, learn what to do with the freshest local produce, then go to the Lake Mills Farmers’ Market on Wednesday night and pick up your week’s groceries!
On alternate weeks, expert local speakers share their experiences with gardening, farming, cooking, buying, storing, and canning. Participants can ask the speakers questions and offer their experiences.
The final class includes a communal dinner where participants make a meal together, sit down to eat it together, and review the class. A raffle concludes the class where winners will walk away with necessary kitchen equipment to help them continue their healthy cooking practices.
$5/class or pay what you can. Child care available.
